The Budget-Friendly Gift Guide for Designers and Creatives

It’s my birthday todayI I’m lucky and still get gifts from loved ones, but I’m one of those people: it’s hard  to find gifts for someone like me.  Not because I make it difficult (ok, maybe a little), but because as a designer and artist, I can be a hard person to shop for. So here’s some thoughts on what to buy your favorite designer on her or his birthday.

And remember, these gifts aren’t great just for birthdays, but for Christmas, Valentines Day, Anniversaries, or just because you care:

Coumba’s “What to buy a designer for a gift” List

This list is broken up into three categories: Don’t Break the Bank, A Little More to Spend, and Money Is No Object.Put down that  keychain with their name on it and take a look below!

Don’t break the bank (Under $20)

These cheap gifts for designers are sure to be a hit.

Hand Lettering for Relaxation: An Inspirational Workbook for Creating Beautiful Lettered Art

$18

Hand lettering is an art that is making a huge comeback in 2019. People are incorporating more of that whimsical cursive lettering into their logos and graphics, and designers would be remiss to not know the basics of this art. This book is a great introduction to the skill, and I’m sure your designer would love to practice this for their clients or themselves!

Miliko A5 Size PU Leather Softcover Dot Grid Wirebound/Spiral Notebook

$13

People forget that designers actually work with pen and paper. We are not constantly glued to our computer screens, and often need to sketch out ideas or wireframes. This grid notebook is perfect for this process, and allows for your designer to create straight lines and grids without hassle.

Creative Workshop: 80 Challenges to Sharpen Your Design Skills

$16

This book will sharpen any designer’s skills and help them out of the slump we all hit now and again. It’s helpful for budding designers and weathered veterans alike. Take  a little break from designing for others, and use this book as a creative outlet for yourself.

A little more to spend ($20-$50)

Gifts in this category are sure to make your designer friend happy and  are built to last.

Relax Support Pillow

$30

We designers do spend a lot of time sitting at our desk, hunched over a notepad or computer. This is absolutely terrible for our posture and back.. So help your designer out, and give them a comfortable back cushion to alleviate the pressure and pain they may be dealing with..

Aluminum 4 Port USB

$30

Designers always need extra space on their desks, and this fancy and fabulous USB Hub lets  your favorite designer to connect their important usbs to their computer without having a tangle of wires around. Trust me when I say that this will be appreciated.

Visioneer RoadWarrior X3 Portable Scanner

$46

Some designers are really pen and paper intensive and when the time comes to translate those scribblings to the digital world, however, it can be hard. Often times we have to stand at weird angles with perfect lighting to capture a picture of the paper with our phones and this isn’t the best way to capture anything.. A portable scanner is the perfect solution  because it translates the crisp definition of their work on paper without taking up a bunch of space (or time to scan!)

Money is no object. ($51 +)

The best category for every designer in your life! Get them something that they will cherish forever, and use in their day to day.

Logitech MX Master 2S Mouse

$155

When I say this is something I use every single day of my designing career, I mean it. This mouse is comfortable, offers a natural grip, and is wireless, making it easy for me to pack up and go wherever, whenever. It also features a dual scroll, making it easy to browse through large files vertically and horizontally. File this one under #nocarpeltunnel.

The Smashing Library

$112

A little secret about designers: we  need inspiration from time to time. For as much as we hate to admit it, we  cannot create masterpieces at the drop of a dime as easily as we’d like to. A solution I’ve found? The Smashing Library:59 ebooks worth of inspiration, tips, tricks, and industry knowledge that any designer could find useful. These books range on topics from web design, accessibility in design, and UX. Let your designer get her/his #inspo on with help from The Smashing Library!

XP-PEN Artist 15.6 inch Full HD IPS Graphics Display Tablet

$370

This is the most expensive gift on this list, but easily one of the most useful. Plus, you’ll get serious bonus points if your designer is also an artist.. Put simply, this artist tablet surpasses others because it allows the user to view their strokes as they make them on the screen. This skips the steps of drawing on paper and transferring to the screen, because it allows your designer to draw directly on the screen!

Hopefully I’ve been able to help you find a gift for your beloved designer   that speaks to her/him  (and your budget). If not, drop me a line at hello@coumba.win and I’ll be happy to help you out with more suggestions..
