Through a collaboration with ZappyRide, a startup offering web tools for electric vehicle (EV) fleet solutions, we helped design a modern, clean, and intuitive layout for Shell. The result? A web-based tool that helps Shell’s consumers learn how to best configure their EV fleets, charging stations, and site infrastructure.

We kicked things off by understanding Shell’s product goals and branding guidelines. Collaboration was fast-paced and iterative, working closely with ZappyRide’s dev team to ensure seamless implementation. From there:

Mapped out key user journeys for fleet managers and sustainability officers.

Created wireframes focused on clarity and guidance—complex EV planning distilled into approachable steps.

Layered Shell’s visual identity over a streamlined UI for a sleek, modern experience.

Challenges

One of the biggest challenges was designing around the technical complexity of EV fleet planning - everything from vehicle types to charging speeds and site layout needed to be considered. At the same time, we had to seamlessly integrate Shell’s global brand into a digital product developed by a third-party startup. Throughout, we had to strike the right balance between educating users and keeping the experience clear and approachable.

Solutions

To tackle the project’s complexity, we built a flexible modular design system that could handle loads of technical input without ever feeling cluttered. We added helpful touches like visual cues, tooltips, and a step-by-step flow to walk users through decisions without overwhelm. And of course, we brought Shell’s brand to life—staying true to their look and feel, but giving it a modern, digital-first spin.

Results

A clean, elegant tool now lives on Shell’s portfolio and is used by customers exploring EV transition options.

Shell received positive feedback from internal teams on usability and visual execution.

Shell continues to expand this toolset with the foundation we helped shape.
